What Does a Conditioner Do?

What Does a Conditioner Do?

In today’s post, we will go over some common questions and discuss what it all means.

▪ Is my leather protected or unprotected?
▪ Absorbent or non-absorbent?
▪ Finished or unfinished?
▪ How do I know and what does it mean?

All leather hides are dyed during manufacturing. These dyes absorb into the leather adding a semi-transparent coloring throughout the hide. At this stage, sanding of the surface also occurs. Without further processing, this material will be known as either suede, nubuck or aniline leather. These leathers are used primarily on apparel, footwear and handbags. These leathers are not protected from the forces that harm them. Suede and nubuck require specialized care, but aniline leather will benefit from regular cleaning and conditioning.

Taking the process a step beyond this, the leather can be coated with a layer of colorant and/or clear coats designed to protect against harsh conditions. This type of leather is used on all car seats, most household furnishings and some apparel. These coatings provide a tough surface which protects the leather substrates. These coatings also offer a method to alter or totally change surface colors and add distinct grain patterns while disguising flaws present in the original animal hides.

What does this mean for me?

Regardless of the leather type you have, Leather Meds provides solutions that will extend the life of your leather.

Preventive Care Cream (PCC) is formulated for protected/finished leathers and Ultra Care (UC) is intended for unprotected leathers. While each product has its intended purpose, either product can be used on any leather or vinyl surface with the exception of nubuck and suede, which conditioners should never be applied to.

PCC has cleaning agents that break down dirt and grime common on finished leather surfaces. It is formulated to be easily applied over large surfaces, such as car interiors and household furniture.

UC has ingredients that will absorb into unprotected apparel and furniture leathers and improve their look and feel. This product also provides maximum protection against sweat, body oils, water and other liquids that come in contact with these surfaces.

Which leather do I have? Place a drop of water in a discreet area of the leather. If it does not absorb, it’s protected and you should use Preventive Care Cream. Does it absorb? If so, it’s unprotected and you should use Ultra Care.
